Rim Banna was booked and ready for St. Olav Festival when she died in March. Now we arrange a concert in tribute to «the voice of Palestine».
The well-known Palestinian artist from Nasareth died on Saturday 12. March, only 51 years old, after a 9-year struggle with breast cancer. In her concert, she had planned to consider the theme of this year’s festival, KROPP, from a very special angle, namely by using her own body which was lambasted by cancer as a metaphor for the occupation of Palestine.
Rim Banna is internationally known as «the voice of Palestine», and although she can no longer be physically present, her voice will be heard throughout this concert. Before she died, Rim managed to complete a new solo album in cooperation with pianist Bugge Wesseltoft and the Tunisian techo-band Checkpoint 303, in which X-rays of her body are electronically transposed to music which is accompanied by piano improvisations. Against this background, Rim recites her powerful poem about occupation and resistance.
Rim Banna developed a special relationship with Norway as a result of long cooperation with Kirkelig Kulturverksted. She worked together on a number of solo albums with musicians such as Tord Gustavsen, SKRUK, guitarist Eivind Aarset and Bugge Wesseltoft. These albums were internationally acclaimed, and Rim Banna became an icon of the entire Arab world, especialy in connection with «the Arab spring».
